Oaks Estate is a small riverside village in the ACT's Jerrabomberra district, right on the border beside Queanbeyan and about twelve kilometres from central Canberra. Renting there usually means a villa or an older house in an area that mixes homes with storage and light commercial uses. Distinct Properties manages rental homes in Oaks Estate and provides ACT property management for each one. Distinct Properties has arranged at least 16 leases in Oaks Estate, 14 of them since January 2020, when its records became complete.

Oaks Estate covers about forty hectares of the ACT, with the Molonglo River along its northern side, the Queanbeyan River on the east and the railway to Cooma marking the south. A road bridge crosses into Queanbeyan, and the Queanbeyan railway station stands just over the tracks. The village is named after The Oaks, once part of Robert Campbell's Duntroon estate, and in the late nineteenth century it was the hub of Queanbeyan's early industry. Robertson House and The Oaks are both heritage listed.

Homes in Oaks Estate are a mix of villas, older houses and a few units, set among storage, workshop and small commercial sites. The first residential lots were auctioned in the late nineteenth century, so some housing carries real age, and an owner of an older house should plan for roofs, plumbing and wiring. Villas tend to need less upkeep, though shared walls and common areas can bring owners corporation arrangements. Before any major works, it pays to check the planning controls that protect the village's heritage character.

Oaks Estate suits renters who want a small village setting with Queanbeyan's shops, station and services just across the bridge and central Canberra a short drive away.

Oaks Estate questions

Is Oaks Estate in the ACT or New South Wales?

Oaks Estate is in the ACT, even though it adjoins Queanbeyan and shares the 2620 postcode. It was separated from Queanbeyan when the Federal Capital Territory was created, and today it sits in the ACT's Jerrabomberra district. We manage homes there as ACT properties, and we are licensed in both the ACT and New South Wales for owners with homes on either side.

What should owners of a villa or older home in Oaks Estate plan for?

For a villa, confirm how shared walls, driveways and any common areas are handled, and keep those arrangements on file. For an older house, plan around the age of the building: roofs, gutters, plumbing and electrical work all need watching. We note condition carefully at each inspection, flag items early, and suggest larger repairs between tenancies so work does not interrupt a household.

Rentals in Oaks Estate run under the Residential Tenancies Act 1997 (ACT). Our landlord FAQs cover bonds, notice and rent increases. This is general information about ACT tenancy law and real estate agent conduct from Distinct Property Management, a licensed ACT real estate agency, not legal advice. Rules differ in NSW and other states. For a dispute, contact the ACT Civil and Administrative Tribunal (ACAT) or a Canberra tenancy advocate.
