An aerial view over the Tuggeranong district

Wanniassa, in Canberra's Tuggeranong district, ACT, is home to the Erindale Centre, a group centre with shops, services and Erindale Library. Both the R4 and R5 rapid buses serve the suburb, and most homes are separate houses. Distinct Properties manages rental homes in Wanniassa, mostly houses, covering leasing, inspections, repairs and statements through its property management. Distinct Properties has arranged at least 20 leases in Wanniassa, 17 of them since January 2020, when its records became complete.

Wanniassa was gazetted in 1974. Its name comes from a grazing run granted to Thomas McQuoid, who called it after Wanayasa in West Java, where he had earlier owned land, and its streets are named after Victorian politicians. The Erindale Centre in the south-east has retail, services and Erindale Library on McBryde Crescent, while the smaller Wanniassa Shops in the north include a supermarket. Erindale College, a public senior secondary college, shares a precinct with a theatre, pool and gym. The R4 and R5 rapid routes both serve the suburb, and local routes meet at the Erindale interchange.

Wanniassa is mostly separate houses, with some townhouses and semi-detached homes, and the census shows most dwellings have three bedrooms or more. As one of the district's earlier suburbs, a house here can date from the seventies. Original features can be part of a home's character, but owners should expect ageing roofs, heating and hot water systems to need attention over the years, and gardens to need a steady hand between tenancies.

Wanniassa gives renters the Erindale Centre's shops, library and leisure facilities, and two rapid bus routes.

Most of the homes we have leased in Wanniassa are houses.

Wanniassa questions

How do the R4 and R5 rapid routes help a Wanniassa rental?

They give tenants two rapid services to choose from. The R4 runs from Tuggeranong through Woden to the City and Belconnen, and the R5 travels from Lanyon via Erindale on a similar path north. For applicants who would rather not drive to work, that choice is worth knowing about, so we note the closest stop to the home in every listing.

My Wanniassa house dates from the seventies. What should I check before leasing it?

Look at the systems first: switchboard, hot water, heating, roof and gutters. Then check the doors, windows, locks and window coverings that tenants use every day, and any original wet areas that may need resealing. We do a walk-through before leasing, give you a list in order of priority and arrange quotes from licensed tradespeople for anything you want done.

Rentals in Wanniassa run under the Residential Tenancies Act 1997 (ACT). Our landlord FAQs cover bonds, notice and rent increases. This is general information about ACT tenancy law and real estate agent conduct from Distinct Property Management, a licensed ACT real estate agency, not legal advice. Rules differ in NSW and other states. For a dispute, contact the ACT Civil and Administrative Tribunal (ACAT) or a Canberra tenancy advocate.
